Same error message after the maverick -> natty udpate (I came here googling it), but now it works for me: I removed the PDF printer, trying to add it again, when I realized it was imposible: cups-pdf package had dissapeared with the update (I swear it was installed before the update) Solution for me on natty: reinstall cups-pdf (sudo apt-get install cups-pdf ), add new pdf printer (from the GUI System > administration > Printing) , and it's working.
