I have now learned a little more. I apologise if, as an amateur
enthusiast, I am not invited to comment here. I reinstalled Lucid for
the nth time yesterday. My chipset according to Memtest 86+ is an
Intel i845E/G/PE/GE (ECC: disabled)/ FSB:132MHz. Having read about the
general answer to the crash symptoms for Intel 8XX chipsets I have
removed (using Software Centre) Compiz, turned the screensaver to Blank
Screen, and turned off all power saving options. Initially the system
ran well. The crashes started at some after I had set F-Spot as my
screensaver and tweeked the power saver settings. The last crash I
think coincided with opening a second Firefox window. Fingers crossed
again now for an improvement.
