I have the same problem... (although I don't see two equal icons) on
Ubuntu dapper drake 6.06

udevmonitor reveals (literally) nothing when I plug or unplug firewire
drive if it is not connected at boot time.

$ dmesg | grep 1394

reveals:

resetting...
