Here's a fix for this problem that works for me on Dell Inspiron 9300 with Ubuntu 7.04.
Enter the following command: touch /etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200 && echo options ipw2200 led=1 > /etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200 This adds a file at /etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200 with the contents "options ipw2200 led=1".
