@David, I tested both without and with headphones plugged in and got no sounds in either. There were activity on the microphone input, but I wasn't able to demonstrate to myself that the activity was due to input from the mic (I made some sounds which didn't seem to register in any special way), or just static from some internal amplifiers (or whatever, not my knowledge domain).
I'll post the alsa-info this evening (when I get home from work).
