Following an upgrade from Kubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 I noticed frequently
that, on resuming the laptop from sleep mode, the panel would be frozen,
and the screen wallpaper would be black. Applets would also be black and
unresponsive. System is not hung, as alt-tab allows me to switch between
running applications, which still function.
After some diagnostics, I determined that this only occurs when the
mobile broadband dongle is attached to the computer at the time it was
put to sleep. Disconnecting the connection using the network-manager
applet and pulling out the adapter prior to initiating sleep mode
prevents the problem from occurring. This was not necessary with Kubuntu
10.10 or any previous version I have used on the same hardware.
When the computer is connected to a wired or wifi network before and
after sleep mode is initiated the problem does not occur.
If the wireless broadband adapter is connected at time of shutdown the
computer will frequently (greater than 50% of the time) show the problem
at startup. This occurs whether or not the adapter was connected to the
computer at the time of resuming.
Computer is a Toshiba Satellite P300-1C9. Wireless broadband adapter is
a Huawei E220 connected to UK provider Three. Kubuntu is up to date with
all updates to date applied.
