Erik, this sounds strange. /etc/network/interfaces should at least
configure the loopback interface:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

otherwise gnome session behaves badly. Can you please check that file
again and perhaps attach it here? If it contains exactly the two lines
above, n-m should pick up the wifi interface. If not, please attach
/var/log/daemon.log. Thank you!
