I have had this problem consistently through several versions of ubuntu,
including natty.  In addition to killing processes, I've tried to use
the <logout> tag's attributes with various values in
/etc/security/pam_mount.conf.xml, none of which ever results in the
filesystem getting unmounted.

If someone can suggest what to try, I'd be glad to help diagnose this
problem.
