Public bug reported:

This problem began immediately after I upgraded from Maverick to Natty (11.04).
I tried using an old kernel and it did not help.
Installed version of gnome-media is 2.32.0-0ubuntu7.

When I plug my USB headset in, it shows up in gnome-volume-control and I
can select it as the default output device. (The headset also has a
microphone which I can select as an input device, and seems to work
properly.)

The available output profiles for the selected device are:
1. Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output
2. Analog Stereo Output

If I choose option 1, the output volume control affects the volume of the
device (but see below).
If I choose option 2, the output volume control has no effect.

HOWEVER, there is another variable here, an extra volume control that I
can only access in alsamixer for the USB device, which is called
"Speaker". This volume control is unrelated to any of the gnome-volume-
control controls (changing one will not cause the other to update), but
it also influences the output volume of the headset! For instance, if
this volume control is 0 and the "Digital Stereo Output" control is 100,
there is no sound. If this volume control is 100 and the "Digital Stereo
Output" is 0, there is no sound. If they are both 100 then there is
sound.

The problem is all the more annoying because each time I plug the USB
device in, the "alsamixer" volume control resets to 0, meaning I have to
go into alsamixer each time I plug the device in in order to hear
anything.

Relevant lsusb and amixer output attached.
