Thanks Lionel. Actually it'd been ages since I filed this bug report and I had forgotten about it. I decided to double check the odd behaviour (I had just been using the physical volume dial on my laptop instead). To my pleasant surprise it is now working as it should have. Perhaps it was fixed in the early patches that trickled in for Natty.
