Hi everyone! Just a thought here, but I remember having similar problems a 
couple of years ago, both on windows and ubuntu, and if I remember correctly, 
the screen that you want to play movies in needs to be the primary screen(ie, 
set the external screen as primary, and your laptop screen in this case, to 
secondary). 
Or you can, as browman said above, choose to use "mirror mode".

This is the same as in windows, so it's probably related to hardware
and/or graphics drivers.

I am not 100%, since it was a couple of years ago, but please go ahead
and test it!
