New tests:

I downloaded on a CD the 10.04 LTS version of Ubuntu (kernel 2.6.32-28).
When running from the CD it worked fine (shutdown and restart were ok,
suspend did not resume - but I guess that is another story) and monitor
resolution was not detected fine.

Thus I guess my original problem has something to do with the kernel
used in 11.04 (in my case 2.6.38-8).

Two questions:
1. where could I look at the schedule of kernel releases for ubuntu 11.04?
2. is there a way to downgrade kernel versions from an already installed ubuntu?

Thanks a lot.
