I think I found the culprit. I disabled the wireless modules (added rt2x00pci, rt2x00lib, rt2800pci and rt2800lib to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf) and ubuntu 11.04 with kernel 2.6.38-8 worked fine again: suspend, resume,shutdown, restart worked ok.
I can live without wireless on that machine, so the problem is not urgent for me. Thanks for the support.
