We are seeing this issue on about 6 desktop-hosts. On average 2 out of
the 6 hang each day. The problems suddenly appeared more or less on the
same day.

We are seeing the same (or very similar) messages in kern.log, and that
block of messages in preceded (right above the --[ cut here ]-- line) by
a handful of messages like this:
