What is needed to track down this (very annoying) bug? I'm seeing the
same issues, but unfortunately this bug is really hard to reproduce. In
my case I usually (but not always) can reproduce it like this

- switch to integrated graphics in bios (intel)
- boot
- gdm autologin into unity --> everything works fine
- shutdown
- switch to ATI graphics card in bios (ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD
3650)
- boot
- gdm autologin into unity

And then the only wallpaper is displayed, but no unity or anything else.
Then repeatingly every 3 or 4 seconds the screen gets black and the
wallpaper is displayed again. Switching to a console and running
"service gdm restart" as root brings up unity without further issues
then.

Attached is the output of dmesg before restarting gdm. Please let me
know if you need additional information.

** Attachment added: "dmesg output"
