I was getting a similar issue. I then tried to cli (xpd file.pdf) and got this
error:
xpdf: error while loading shared libraries: libXm.so.4: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory
So then I:
sudo apt-get install libmotif4
Works fine now.
