Since the issue is happening when memory is about full but hasn't
swapped, it may be worth mentioning that I have runtime kernel
configuration done to optimize Ubuntu for my SSD drive.

excerpt from the /etc/sysctl.conf:

vm.dirty_ratio = 40
vm.dirty_background_ratio = 1
vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs = 6000

vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50
vm.swappiness=1
