I can also confirm this issue on a current edgy installation.

When the webcam is plugged in on boot it always becomes device 0 and the
real sound card becomes device 1. This breaks all apps using audio.
Also, unplugging doesn't help, because then, there's not even a device 0
anymore and the apps break even more...

The driver the webcam is using is snd_usb_audio. Please add this

Martin, what exactly do you want me to try? There are three
possibilities to choose a different device.

The problem is definitely that the webcam gets index 0 and pointing
users to the audio settings to change it back is no option IMHO.
Removable devices should probably only get index 0 if no other audio HW
is installed...
