an update on this bug - i was able to update the computer to 7.04, but had to boot to an old 2.6.15 kernel after the update to 6.10 was done. this caused some confusion to the updater which was easy to fix, but the end result was an updated box that does not exhibit the kernel panic when booted to the latest 7.04 kernel.
