Hi Ruth and thanks for your bug report! This problem is due to the "Front" volume control on the ALSA level is controlling your headphones, which is a known bug on some machines.
Could you please try the following and see if it helps to resolve your problem: 1) Click speaker icon, then sound preferences. On the output tab, try having "Analog Output" instead of "analog headphones" as your connector, then move the volume slider. 2) If the above does not help, you can manually adjust the "front" slider: start a terminal and execute the "alsamixer" command. Navigate to the "front" slider, press "M" to toggle mute status and arrow keys to change the volume. Please report back as of either of this helped you.
