As far as I know, adding the --enable-gl configure flag doesn't change the
bahaviour of existing code, but extends the API to enable OpenGL accelerated
drawing, and interoperability with existing GL contexts. This can boost
performances for many applications, should they use to use these features.
This would add dependency on glx, which is already required by any compositing
WM and is very likely already available on most systems.
As it is, I have to build cairo by hand to use this feature.
