I have an LG R590-5500 and I have the same issue since Ubuntu 10.04. I am now using Ubuntu 11.04 with all updates, still the same problem. I also installed all the BIOS updates for this machine. I remember that one BIOS update solved the same problem with new NVidia drivers in Windows 7. The problem happens to me with the proprietary or without the proprietary NVidia drivers. I think this problem is severe, as this drains the battery very fast and the level of brightness is so strong that I can only use Ubuntu with sunglasses. (or inside vmware in Windows, as the brightness control in Windows works and you can use Ubuntu comfortable.)
