Thanks David... Sound now works, fixed using alsamixer after some experimenting.
There were four S/PDIF choices and the the one that worked 1 of 0,1,2,3 had inexplicably been changed to 0. As I recall, the /etc/asound.conf was an attempt during original install to get the audio working.
