Great.  Now run these commands before reinstalling it:
(You can just copy and paste each one instead of typing them out)

sudo rm -r /var/lib/update-manager
sudo rm -r /etc/update-manager
sudo rm -r /usr/lib/update-manager
sudo rm -r /usr/share/update-manager
sudo rm -r /etc/update-manager
sudo rm -r /home/john/.gconf/apps/update-manager
sudo rm -r /home/john/.cache/update-manager-core

Then reinstall it and see if it works properly.
