Not sure what is going wrong here.
Could you please post the output of (please upload mkinitramfs.log)
sudo sh -x /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs -o /tmp/foo > mkinitramfs.log 2>&1
and
sudo sh -x /usr/sbin/update-initramfs -u > update-initramfs.log 2>&1
