I've created a PPA with a patched package so it'll be easier for you to
test:

  https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/kiwi

Install that, restart X, and try reproducing the bug.  This null ptr
check is just papering over the issue so you may still see it crash some
other way, or else have odd misbehaviors.

You mentioned it crashes with different backtraces sometimes.  It would
be instructive to see those other backtraces; they may give extra
context to where in the stack the bug is coming from.
