Try to create any archive with the following command, which exceeds 2GB
on the default ext3 filesystem.
pax -x cpio -w -f <output> <input>
The command will stop with :
pax: End of archive volume 1 reached
ATTENTION! pax archive volume change required.
Ready for archive volume: 2
Input archive name or "." to quit pax.
Archive name > .
Quitting pax!
pax: Unable to write cpio header for (null)
