What do you mean by can't open any application? You can't open application
pages in software center? If not, this might not be a software center problem
(as you've mentioned something about changing compiz animations), and might
have to be reassigned to another package to receive quicker response. In the
meantime, you could check on irc.freenode.net in the #ubuntu channel for
support. If you can't start any application, but online help, start the online
help (I assume that opens a browser) and type in the address bar
webchat.freenode.net, and log in with a username to the #ubuntu channel.
