The "backend spins out of control" problem is bug 553328 which is Fix
Released and has an SRU in Lucid proposed (I notice you were using Lucid
at the time this report was filed). This is also fixed in Checkbox trunk
so newer versions of Ubuntu will have this fix already in (I think it's
in Maverick already).
The "does not report backend failures" behavior was somewhat improved in
checkbox revision 918 which fixes bug bug 588539 and will be available
in Oneiric. Note that all it does is keep the frontend from blocking if
the backend fails to start or dies, but the tests that need the backend
to run will not actually return any results. This would be mitigated
once bug 773284 (gksu silently fails when bad password given) is solved.
Could you please confirm whether this is still an issue with the fixes I
mention?
I'll mark the report as incomplete for now, awaiting confirmation on how
things are going for you.
