After comparing both packages, it seems that natty's linux-firmware is missing
the following commits:
rt2860sta: Use latest firmware for RT3090 [for PCI]
rt2870sta: Use latest firmware for RT3070 and RT3071 [for USB]
The modified firmware files are exclusively used by the ralink drivers
in staging (and they are updated to use the same firmware that's
provided for the mainline drivers).
So for some reason, you're still using the staging driver. Please provide the
output of lsusb. Is it possible that you've previously blacklisted the mainline
drivers (rt2800usb)?
FYI: with oneiric, the rt28{6,7}0sta drivers in staging will be removed.
