With compiled clamav
* Mail: 10 secs full processing power
* clamscan fixed directory/ 33 files: 18 seconds (with a pause before start)

With clamav form ubunto reps:
* More then 1 minute full porcessor power
* Clamscan 22 secs

With Edgy clamav 88.4
* No full processor power mail (unnoticed)
* Clamscan 16 secs

Mail is scanned through procmail:
:0
VIRUS=| clamscan --no-summary --stdout - | cut -d' ' -f2 -

:0
* VIRUS ?? !^OK
{
  :0
  SUBJECT=| egrep '^Subject:' - | sed -e 's/Subject: //' -
  :0 fw
  | formail -i"Subject: [VIRUS: ${VIRUS}] ${SUBJECT}"
}

Googling feisty clamav performance
shows several new hits like:
http://lurker.clamav.net/message/20070419.164705.e5fad15c.en.html
witch describes this issue
en mentiones recent patches

Although i am a user and not an expert:
Looks like something in clamav itself / not in the way ubuntu did its thing
Looks like ubuntu clamav = unpatched latest = worst
Looks like compiled clamav is faster: may be already patched
