Found the root of the problem: xdg-open calls gvfs-open.  In Terminal, I
typed in 'gvfs-open trash:///'.  Again, EOG got started.

Digging further, I found clues on internet about associations for gfvs,
especially file $HOME/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list which had
following lines in it:

[Added Associations]
text/x-tex=gedit.desktop;
inode/directory=eog.desktop;

[Default Applications]
trash=examples.desktop
trash:///=examples.desktop

I swear that I did not change anything like this! ;-)  (Is this related
to Bug #797000?)
