Can you please try to edit /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop and
change:
Exec=gnome-session --session=ubuntu
by
Exec=gnome-session --session=ubuntu --debug
Then, launch your session which doesn't fallback correctly and attach here
~/.xsession-errors
