KDM is KDE Display Manager. It's much better from the marketing point of view to start a new thing instead of fixing old bugs. In my opinion, the bug is not in the KDM itself, but in the way it's been integrated with the Kubuntu system. LightDM is based on WebKit and is HTML powered. A lot of technology for just doing a graphical login.
