This is a long shot, but perhaps this bug is related to Bug #110187. This bug primarily concerns wireless connectivity but one of the side effects when there is no working network connection is that login from gdm is very slow and then once the desktop is loaded, the desktop is slow. This maybe related to avahi (not sure)???
