Andreas,

My condition for wicd failure does not quite fit these conditions.
Missing user was not the case.

I used the Update Manager to maintain 11.04 on my triple booted
application testing Mac Pro (OS/X, MS XP, and Ubuntu 11.04). The
failure occurred during a very large update due to a prolonged absence
on my part using my "normal, never-deleted, sudo" account.

Does this provide additional clues or make matters worse?

Thanks for your quick response. This is one of the many reasons that I
love using Ubuntu.
