I have similar issues with a Huawei E272 modem. After some time it
disconnects, and I have to unplug and plug the modem again in order to
connect again.

Disconnection occurs much less often and also reconnection is possible
without replugging the modem if there is some keep-alive network traffic
trough the modem. So I usually run the following command in a terminal
in the background:

$ ping -i9 www.some-server-that-responds.com

This generates some minimal network traffic every 9 seconds, and that is
enough for some time to keep the connection alive. However, random
disconnections do still occur. The modem seems to be hidden from the
system for a second, as if it were plugged out and in again (but no such
thing happens).

Syslog excerpt attached.
