Have uploaded the requested information, please let me know if I can contribute any more to resolving this issue. Would expect the proprietary drivers to give better performance than the open source drivers, so not sure why Unity won't work with them... Ubuntu even suggests installing the proprietary drivers, so I just followed the suggestion!
