I am adding this comment for others who searched under the phrase "
modprobe timeout after 30 seconds during boot "

In my case, after noticing the slow boot, I installed bootchart and saw
modprobe taking 30 seconds.

Secondly, booting up with the kernel option "quiet" removed, showed that
the system was "waiting for root filesystem" .

The workaround above, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.20/+bug/94981/comments/13 works for me.

{
However, the above blacklisting via editing /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist didn't
work for me (no difference).

And blacklisting via a blacklist file , e.g.
    echo blacklist ata_piix > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ata_piix
results in a a failed boot.
}

Also want to mention that, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/106864/ has some similar information.
