That's a coincidence! I can conform what alricsca has said - it doesn't work on 64bit, but does on 32bit. Interestingly, I removed ndiswrapper, and tried to use Windows on VirtualBox to talk to my Netgear USB, and when VirtualBox was accessing the device, all USB devices started hanging (including mouse/keyboard), and the machine more or less crashed - so it appears that whatever the problem is, it's not just related to ndiswrapper...
