a little bit of history:

(i'll try to keep this short, but 1. some background on my situation
might help tracking down the source of the bug and 2. this has been
going on for so long that i feel it's time to abuse this website here to
log some history of events before i forget it all...)

i had kubuntu 8.04 on my server for several years (iirc since it came
out), running a number of virtual machines to provide all kinds of
services (DNS, DHCP, LDAP, database, version control, mail, doc repo, a
couple of TB of storage from a ZFS pool over a virtual FreeBSD machine,
etc. pp.) never even the slightest issue.

then i relocated, i.e. moved house. the server was sitting in storage
for a couple of months and then was shipped on a container ship from one
continent to another. when i got it back at last, a few fans had died,
the cpu had jumped out of its socket, some cards were loose. after i'd
fixed all that, i installed kubuntu 10.04 (original .0 version back then
i believe).

then the system froze. i'd never had anything like that before. nothing
in the logs, nothing in dmesg, no chance to recover apart from a cold
reboot. considering quite some hardware had not made it over the ocean
without damage, i assumed a hardware issue; after all, the system
started ok, but then froze after a while (2 hours ?)

so i started running memory tests which revealed nothing and then went
about replacing hardware - graphics card (2x), motherboard, cpu, memory,
drives, finally the psu.

now the only piece of equipment that's left is the case with its LEDs
and switches. this gives reason to believe it's a software, not a
hardware problem, but there's still the theoretical possibility even the
new hardware is flaky - and ubuntu had never ever frozen on me like
that...

i posted the issue at http://serverfault.com/questions/290627/linux-
freezes-how-to-find-out-if-hardware-or-software-is-the-cause (of course
i should have done this much earlier, before i spend any money, guess
that's what happens when you're dealing with stuff like that without a
second pair of eyes). in the process, i also came across
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1756270

so much for my historical notes (mostly to self), will post some info
more relevant to the bug next.
