Another workaround I found is to set the display resolution to something greater than 800x600 (such as 1024x768). When gcompris starts in fullscreen mode (at 800x600) the panels no longer affect the gcompris window. However, upon exiting gcompris, the desktop resolution not correctly switched back out of 800x600.
