This looks like bug 3731. Note that between Memo's two xorg.conf files
that the monitor got switched from
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "COMPAQ 7500"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
to
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 28-51
VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection
which artificially constrains the sync and refresh rates X can use,
which often results in failing to recognize otherwise good modes. You
may also need to add "1280x1024" in the Modes lines. I suspect with
these changes, you'll be able to use either driver.
