Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

>From your description it would appear that the "backend" component of
checkbox is not running, that's why the graphical interface part stays
there "forever" trying to collect information from the "backend" which
never responds. There is a fix for this problem in the development
version of checkbox, but I'd like to verify that this problem is exactly
what you have before moving further.

Could you please indicate the exact steps you followed to get this
problem to happen, from the moment you open the System Testing
application? I'm particularly interested in the dialog box that asks you
to "Enter  your password to perform administrative tasks" - if you fail
to enter your password correctly, or "cancel" that dialog, the backend
won't start and Checkbox will stall forever.

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.
