Public bug reported:

Error occurred whilst re-installing Eclipse application. Had problems
installing 11.04 from installation disc (clean installation). Upon a
bootable attempt, backup files were recovered using "Simple Backup-
Restoration." Restored paths, directories and files included were /etc,
/var, /home and /usr/local. When re-installing software applications
that I had installed before, the Ubuntu Software Centre showed all
applications I had installed before as "installed" with a tick. The only
way I thought I could resolve this issue was to un-install each
application and re-install them again.
