Public bug reported: Unable to disable the Atheros AR9285 internal wireless networking adapter of the Toshiba NB520 netbook. The Fn+F8 keystroke is unresponsive (but works correctly when booted in Windows 7). The ath9k kernel modules does not appear to provide any parameters to toggle the enabled/disabled state. The toshiba_acpi kernel module fails with a fatal error "no such device". The omnibook kernel module does have a "wifi" enabledisable parameter, but the module fails to load.
Blacklisting the ath9k (and toshiba_bluetooth) kernel modules partially disables the wireless, but the radio is still on (consuming battery unnecessarily and prohibiting use of the machine in wifi-restricted areas such as hospitals). Further details also at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1805187 Ideally the Fn+F8 keystroke would be fully functional. Failing that, a means of fully disabling the wireless radio (and re-enabling it without needing to reboot) would be an adequate workaround.
