This is still the case even with the most recent version 11.04 of Ubuntu. The disk is not blanked, it is simply overwritten. Overwriting a disk is usually never needed and reduces the lifespan of the disk. This is a simple bug to fix and all that needs changing is the wording on the GUI. The words "Blank Disk" should be changed to something more appropriate like "Overwrite Disk" this will give the correct impression of what is about to happen and would assume me that the lifespan of the disk is not being unnecessarily wasted. I would almost consider this a paper cut bug.
