This doesn't sound much like a Firefox bug, I have changed to Unity
which I suspect is closer to the mark.

As to why it might work on one release and not another, I suspect it is
down to the graphics driver that you had running in each.  In the fresh
install perhaps you ticked the option for installing third party
drivers, which probably brought in the proprietary driver for your card,
and therefore worked.  On your existing install you may be using an open
source driver, which may not fully support 3D and thus might not work.

You could provide details of your hardware, by running Terminal and
typing "lspci" and reading off the VGA entry.  Then can determine what
driver module you have loaded by typing "lsmod | grep video".  This
information would be useful for anyone to help you with this problem.
