I also can confirm this bug. I have an HP Pavilion dv6106eu with a TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D.
Killing hald-addon-storage: polling /dev/hda brings the system back to normal working speed. This is really annoying. >From what I've seen on the internet, these drives do incorrectly report "Incompatible medium installed" instead of "No medium installed". But in any cases, please find a fix. Windows can deal just fine with the drive.
