There's very little to recompile - it a binary only driver. The only thing you 
could recompile is the glue layer which isn't really going to make much 
difference. Given that this bug lockups up your entire system the problem can't 
possibly lie with Blender so recompiling it would likely not help (the only 
thing you could possibly do is try and work out exactly what operation blender 
did which lead to a lock up and basically see if you could rewrite blender not 
to do it). 

It might be interesting to find out whether disabling RenderAccel (as
described here;
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-d.html
) helps your stability. Further because your card is relatively modern
you have the option to try the nvidia-glx-new drivers. It would be good
to know whether your problems still persist with those...
